Background independence and field redefinitions in quantum gravity

چکیده
It is generally believed that a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity should exhibit background independence and diffeomorphism invariance. In its most general form, the latter comprises field redefinitions, which are diffeomorphisms in configuration space. We show any path-integral approach to leads tension between these properties, such they cannot hold simultaneously.

ON THE BACKGROUND INDEPENDENCE OF STRING FIELD THEORY III. Explicit Field Redefinitions
Given two conformal field theories related to each other by a marginal perturbation, and string field theories constructed around such backgrounds, we show how to construct explicit redefinition of string fields which relate these two string field theories. The analysis is carried out completely for quadratic and cubic terms in the action. Although a general proof of existence of field redefini...

متن کاملConsistency of Quantum Background Independence
We analyse higher order background independence conditions arising from multiple commutators of background deformations in quantum closed string field theory. The conditions are shown to amount to a vanishing theorem for ∆S cohomology classes. This holds by virtue of the existence of moduli spaces of higher genus surfaces with two kinds of punctures. Our result is a generalisation of a previous...
متن کاملQuantum Background Independence in String Theory
Not only in physical string theories, but also in some highly simplified situations, background independence has been difficult to understand. It is argued that the “holomorphic anomaly” of Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri, and Vafa gives a fundamental explanation of some of the problems. Moreover, their anomaly equation can be interpreted in terms of a rather peculiar quantum version of background ...
متن کاملThe role of Background Independence for Asymptotic Safety in Quantum Einstein Gravity∗
We discuss various basic conceptual issues related to coarse graining flows in quantum gravity. In particular the requirement of background independence is shown to lead to renormalization group (RG) flows which are significantly different from their analogs on a rigid background spacetime. The importance of these findings for the asymptotic safety approach to Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is ...
